Between
April 24 and May 3, the HMU delegation of medical education, comprising
eight administrators for teaching affairs from the University and the
affiliated schools, visited the University of Washington School of
Medicine, the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and Irvine (UCI),
and Stanford University. This visit was part of
the CMB funded Project “Medical Education Reform”.
During the visit in UW
Medicine, Dr. Paul G. Ramsey, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs
and Dean of the School
of Medicine, met the
delegation. Professor Tom E. Norris, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, and
the other faculty of the School talked with the delegates about the medical
education and reform at the UW Medicine, especially emphasizing their
College System. They also presented their experience in joint medical
programs with other Chinese medical schools, and offered their advice on how
to proceed between HMU and the UW Medicine. Professor Zhao Guang, Head of the delegation and Dean of the HMU Dean’s
Office, thanked the UW Medicine for their invitation and hospitality. He
talked to the hosts about the HMU and its medical education reform. The
delegates and the UW faculty exchanged their ideas on the medical education
in China and the USA.
Bothe sides expressed their wishes for further cooperation.
When the delegation
visited the UCSD, Professor Maria Savoia, Vice
Dean for Medical Education, met them. Faculty of the university got the HMU
delegates informed of their medical education. They especially gave a
detailed account of educational computing, professional development,
faculty development and evaluation, admissions and undergraduate medical
education. The HMU delegates also visited educational computing laboratory,
clinical skills laboratory and library. Some UCSD faculty and students were
arranged to meet the delegates. They exchanged ideas in areas of interest. Both
sides hoped to explore more opportunities for cooperation on the basis of
this visit.
Ms Laurie Macaulay,
Associate Director for Integrative Medicine, met the HMU delegation during
their visit at the UCI. The delegates observed their clinical skills
center, visited the campus accompanied by a student guide, and discussed
issues in medical education with some UCI faculty. Both sides would like to
cooperate in every possible field.
Before returning to China, accompanied by the HMU alumni, the
HMU delegates visited Stanford
University Hospital
and Clinics. In San Francisco,
during meeting the HMU alumni, Professor Zhao Guang
extended regards to them on behalf of the University. The alumni said they
were pleased to see the progress of HMU in recent years, and would like to
strengthen their communication and cooperation with the Alma Mater.
The delegation was
composed of teaching administrators of the University and schools. As part
of the CMB project, the delegates have learned about the medical education
and reform in the medical schools of the United States. Though they had
a tight schedule, they overcame difficulties and had a successful visit,
which has laid a good foundation for the ongoing Project “Medical Education
Reform” supported by CMB. Meanwhile, this visit has expanded the delegates’
knowledge of medical education and will surely help facilitate the medical
education reform at HMU.
