On June 4, Professor David
Kwan from China Medical University
in Taiwan
was invited to give a lecture on Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Two hundred
and forty teachers, teaching administrators and students attended the
lecture.
Professor
Kwan has practiced PBL as a tutor in medical education at McMaster
University of Canada for nearly two decades. He is an award-winning tutor
and a dedicated PBL advocate. He helped introduce PBL to the medical faculty
of the University
of Hong Kong since
1994 and a hybrid model of PBL curriculum was launched in 1997 there. In
2000, Prof. Kwan also helped the Faculty of Medicine of the National
University of Singapore develop a hybrid PBL curriculum. Professor Kwan remains
active in the Asia Pacific region towards promotion of both medical
education and research. He also served as a PBL advisor/consultant for many
medical schools in this region.
During his lecture at
HMU, integrating his long-term experience and understanding, he gave a
detailed account of the rationale, objectives, methods and requirements of
PBL. After the lecture, Professor Kwan demonstrated PBL with eight HMU
students. The audiences got a personal understanding of PBL.
In
the afternoon, Professor Kwan arranged for some participants of the lecture
to train in PBL lesson plan. He gave his guidance to the teams and answered
their questions.
The teachers and administrators have learned a great deal
from the lecture and training. They have had a better understanding of PBL.
It will be of instructive significance for HMU faculty to update their educational
thinking.
President Yang Baofeng and Vice
President Cao Depin met with Professor Kwan during
his visit at HMU. They accompanied him to visit the School
of Pharmacy, the School of Public Health
and the campus. |
