The Department of Environmental Health at Harbin Medical University was founded in 1949, making it one of the first academic disciplines of modern environmental health education in China. In 1981 it became one of the first institutions authorized to confer master’s degrees, and in 1989 it was designated a key discipline by the university. The department gained national recognition for its research on mercury pollution in the Songhua River and received national scientific awards. In 2024 it was selected as a leading provincial talent team in Heilongjiang.

The department currently has six faculty members: two full professors, two associate professors and two lecturers, three of whom have overseas research experience. Among them are six master’s supervisors and five doctoral supervisors. The department is responsible for undergraduate teaching in preventive medicine and for training master’s and doctoral students specializing in environmental health. Faculty members have participated in compiling multiple editions of the national planning textbook “Environmental Health.”

Research in the department follows a distinctive “dual-wheel” model. One focus is “environmental exposure and nutritional intervention,” investigating the health effects of environmental factors and their prevention. The second focus is “health risks and control technologies of emerging environmental pollutants,” demonstrating the discipline’s capacity for innovation and expansion.

As of 2025, the department has led 11 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (seven general-program grants and four youth grants) and dozens of provincial or ministerial projects. It has published more than 50 SCI-indexed papers, 70 % of which appear in JCR Q1 or Q2 journals, including three with impact factors above 10 and a highest single impact factor of 14.1. Over 100 papers have been published in Chinese core journals, and faculty have contributed to more than 10 monographs. Three national invention patents have been granted. The department has received one second-class prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Education and one from the provincial government, one third-class prize each from the Ministry of Health and the provincial government, and more than 10 other awards. It has also been honored with the university-level titles “Model Civilized Women’s Team” and “Advanced Collective in Three-Education Work.”
